In the video, Guess the Mystery Piece by Creatively Exploring its Chords, I encouraged viewers to improvise and/or compose their own melodies, using a chord progression taken from a famous piano piece. To illustrate this, I first played an example of what an improvisation might be like. Next, instead of improvising, I played a melody I composed to go with the piece's progression:
- First, I played my new melody in its simplest arrangement, leaving the chord voicings exactly as they were; blocked.
- I then played my piece in a fuller arrangement. This used arpeggiated chords split between the hands as an accompaniment.
Both these versions are available for downloading, below. The full arrangement of my melody has a contemporary appeal because of its rhythms. How might these two arrangements be used in a learning sequence? Here are some ideas:
