Bass Line Warmups ( 4 Files )
Playing a melody with a walking bass line is one of the more difficult jazz piano arranging styles to master. In this texture, the left hand sets a solid and grounded rhythmic pulse and feel, strongly implying all the harmonies, and ornamenting structural notes, all in a pleasing melodic way which complements and supports the melody and other rhythmic elements in the piece. These exercises can be used as warm-ups for a practice session. Each exercise typically takes a week or two to master, so students should work at their own pace. They train the ear, and begin to lay the groundwork for secure playing in this style. They are fun to play around the cycle of fourths on their own, and are also easily transferred into song arrangements.
